Opus Dei: cult or just a few bad apples?
LINK
I have never watched Michael Voris' stuff, which is not available here, but he seems a bit hyper of what I have scannnned; so I was not surprised when someone outed him as "gay". Well, yes. People who were over the top on one thing tend not to go to the middle but just get a new enthusiasm. Horowitz comes to mind. Or (for a more gentle enthusiast), lots of saints including St Francis of Assisi.
However, Michael Jones: is that the one who used to write "culture wars"? I once cancaled his newsletter for being rabid. At the time, no one had heard about Soros (this was in the early 1990's) but I was aware of his organizations stealthily pushing drug legalization (all drugs) and euthanasia (under the guise of quality of life, denying their real goal). So I was looking for information on that SOB, but the "culture wars" articles were so rabid and over the top I just could not read them.
well, anyway, I'll have to read the whole thing slowly, which I don't have the time or energy to do now.
However, you know, Convents and monasteries are prone to cultish activity and overcontrol (e.g. Intercessors of the Lamb, the Jansenist nuns, or even read Mother Angelica's biography, where she was put in charge of the novices to counteract the main mistress of novices who was too into control and manipulation).
Of course, convents are also prone to new age fads. Not just now, but in the middle ages.(the Benguine movement went kaput when they went nuts).
some critical stories coming out about OD suggest cult like activity.
but a lot of the article suggests something more: they are getting into communications and teaching.
Hmm.. .sounds like they are taking over what the Jesuits used to do, but since a lot are laypeople, they can do it more stealthily.
One of my exchange students (when I had a family and lived in the USA) was Spanish and from a noble family, and he had relatives in the group. He made a remark that they would pooof, disappear for awhile on a mission and come back later.
Sort of sounds like CIA stuff.
But a lot of bishops are upset because (oh horrors) they go against the local version of Catholicism: Teaching strict dogma instead of wishy washy liberation theology in South America for example.
On the other hand, knowing the theological corruption of Detroit diocese, I couldn't think of a nicer place for them to haunt:
from bishops accountability org: well, he wasn't as bad as some of the other bishops.
Archbishop Adam J. Maida, however, wasn't notified of the Opus Dei presence in his archdiocese. How is this possible? When dealing with the Prelature it's is always good to read the fine print.
Although the Prelature is required to obtain the prior permission of the local ordinary for the establishment of a canonically-erected center, this is not a requirement for a dependent/subordinate non-canonically erected center. Opus Dei is a universal diocese without geographic boundaries and can redefine its boundaries to suit its purpose. And it did just this in Detroit.
The result was that it wasn't until the spring of 2012 that Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, who had replaced the retired Archbishop Maida
And the Freepers noted his response to a Catholic pro abort governor was a wishy washy statement condeming abortion.
but Engles notes Voris moved into the same area after they were kicked out.
Detroit is one of the tipping points: Kavorkian was in that area, as was the renewal heretics. But a lot of Christians fighting the filth: constance cumbey comes to mind.she has noted a lot of stealthy new age etc stuff working with business people in her area.
but is the Catholic push back merely a manipulation by Opus dei or grass roots? Who knows?
so how much of their agenda is a power grab, as Engle claims, and how much is trying to not be a patsy for giving money to the bishops who are so weak in preaching the gospel of Jesus and not stopping the gospel of do gooder abortion/mercy?
I have no idea. I live in the Philippines, where the pious middle class is turning protestant and the cardinal of Manila is a Francis bishop who is talked about as the next pope.
Too many bishops cozied up to corrupt politicians who gave the church money. The church is probably corrupt here (heck, everything is) but the shit hasn't hit the fan yet, (although Duterte has cursed out the bishops and threatened to expose the juicer scandals (there is a strict libel law here, so the juicy details are hard to get).
But every time I visit my husband's grave, I pass the fancy mausoleum of the ex mayor who was behind the hit that killed our nephew and four other folks.
Buried with a mass and with the knights of Columbus there too.
yes, I am a catholic: and will remain so, because of the Eucharist. Where else can I go?
And I have known of good priests and even those martyred. So it balances out. Twelve apostles, one a traitor, one a faithful follower, and ten sort of trying to hold on meekly without causing waves.
