Both Anglicans and Catholic boys were among the martyrs: these boys were serving at the court of the king.
Basic story: Britannica version:
Christians were tolerated by the kabaka Mutesa I, but his successor, Mwanga, launched a campaign against them. Mwanga massacred the Anglican missionary bishop James Hannington and his colleagues in October 1885. Joseph Mukasa, an important member of the royal household and a Catholic, reproached the kabaka for the massacre, and, on November 15 of that year, Mwanga had Mukasa beheaded. The Christian pages under Mukasa’s guidance became the next victims.
so were these young teenagers spies or insurgents? Or was there another reason that is left out of the history books.

Missionaries the world over, whether Catholic or Protestant, have always consistently targeted anal intercourse as one of the first traditional practices to be eliminated. One reason for Christian hostility was the association of sodomy with Islam. Xavier in Japan in the mid-sixteenth century had three principal messages: pray only to God, give up sodomy and stop infanticide. He and his preachers were ridiculed in the streets by incredulous Japanese: ‘these are the men who think sodomy is wrong!’ It was widely and openly practised among Buddhist monks and at the Tokugawa court. Ricci in Peking only a little later found it everywhere: ‘the horrible sin to which everyone here is much given, and about which there seems to be no shame or impediment’.[1] Their Protestant successors were even more opposed to it. In Buganda in the late 1880s confrontation on this issue resulted in the martyrdom of a considerable number of boys and young men at the court of Mwanga (Kabaka, 1884-88, 1889-97).
actually, Islam forbids pederasty, but never mind.
One of the reason for African "homophobia" is sexual abuse of boys.
Yes, girls also were abused (When the Dominican sisters in Rhodesia, who were brought there to nurse and teach the local settler's children, set up a school and orphanage for the mixed blood children, the settlers who objected were told that these were their children too..._)
But girls were inferior, so there were customs for them to be concubines so it was okay.
But boys often were abused by the European settlers, who sent their "problem" sons to Africa
And the Islamic tribes who raided and enslaved the Bantus in various areas for the Arab slave trade often sexually abused the boys.
The male rape of POW's in the various wars in Africa is another story that is not told in many history books: Often these men have an inner rage against white settlers, or against gay rights, or the atrocities done by soldiers who went amok, are due to this inner rage.
Article on male victims of war.
As Zainab Hawa Bangura, the United Nations Secretary-General’s special representative on sexual violence in conflict, pointed out: ‘The crippling repercussions of rape in war are devastating for women, but our sons and brothers who are victims also suffer in silence.’ What distinguishes crimes of sexual violence from other types of crime committed in conflict is the additional burden of stigma, shame and guilt. No form of violation is more personal; and victims are often internally conflicted as to what exactly happened to them. This is likely one of the reasons that propels warring parties to use this tactic. Victims are silenced by the fear of social ignominy, and risk being ostracised from their communities should they report that they were sexually violated. Victims are often willing to talk about what they witnessed...
